Wayzata Men's Cross Country

Saturday Night Lights History

Saturday Night Lights began in 2013 as an event only for the Wayzata boys cross country team. It allowed athletes and coaches to easily have a measuring stick of improvement without the variables of a cross country course or event, while creating a fun environment for the team members to compete with and against each other. The middle school teams begin with 1600m races and the high schoolers follow with a series of 3200m races. They are raced from slowest to fastest, with the top runners competing in the final race of the night that has seen numerous sub-10:00 3200m performances. The performances from the 3200m events are also submitted as the team's entry for the Hoka One One Postal Nationals each fall. Postal Nationals used to be a way for teams to submit performances (by mail) and compare one another across the country in the days before the Internet and NXN. It is still conducted today.
